Smart Summer Maintenance Tips for Concrete Pump Efficiency

In hot climates like Saudi Arabia, UAE, Oman, and other parts of the Gulf region, concrete pump maintenance in summer can be challenging. Prolonged exposure to high temperatures, long working hours, and dusty environments can lead to engine overheating, hydraulic failures, and electrical breakdowns.

Whether you’re using a trailer-mounted concrete pump or a truck-mounted boom pump, here’s a practical, data-backed maintenance guide to help you avoid costly downtime and keep your jobsite running smoothly.

1. Perform a Full Preventive Check Before Peak Heat Hits

Before the hottest months begin, schedule a comprehensive inspection and service. Focus on the following components:

Engine Oil & Filter

  • Replace engine oil with 15W-40 or 20W-50 diesel oil for better high-temperature resistance.
  • Brands to consider: Shell Rimula R4, Mobil Delvac MX, or Sinopec Tulux T500.

Replace Filters

  • Engine oil filter, fuel filter, air filter should be changed before heavy use.
  • Clean air filters every 250 hours or more often if working in dusty areas (e.g., desert or cement plant).

Fan Belts

  • Inspect tension: Press the belt mid-span. It should deflect 10–15mm.
  • Loose belts reduce cooling efficiency; tight belts wear out pulleys.

Radiator & Cooling System

  • Coolant level: Fill to 90% of tank, but not past MAX line.
  • Use ethylene glycol-based coolant, 50/50 mix with distilled water.
  • Check radiator cap pressure: 1.0–1.2 bar (14–17 psi).

2. Hydraulic System: Temperature & Oil Matter

Your hydraulic system is the heart of your pump. High oil temperatures reduce viscosity and can damage seals or slow response time.

Key Parameters:

  • Working temp range: 45°C – 65°C
  • Warning level: Above 75°C, then reduced performance, risk of damage
  • Oil grade: Use ISO VG 68 (preferred for Gulf climates)
  • Change interval: Every 800–1,000 hours or every 6 months
  • Filter changes:
    • Return filter: Every 500 hours
    • Suction filter: Every 1,000 hours

Tip: If you see sluggish boom movement or oil discoloration, it’s time to inspect or flush.

3. Electrical Systems & Battery Check

High heat accelerates wire aging and battery wear. Keep the electrical system in top condition.

  • Replace any brittle or cracked wires, terminals, rubber hoses
  • Battery voltage:
    • Standby: 12.6V–12.8V
    • During engine start: Not below 10V
  • Protect electrical control units (ECUs) from dust and heat buildup

For air-conditioning, circuit boards, and ECU diagnostics, always consult certified technicians to avoid warranty voids or damage.

4. Maintain Operator Safety & Comfort

The machine isn’t the only thing affected by the heat — your operators are too. Heat fatigue leads to mistakes.

Tips:

  • Schedule shifts for early morning or late afternoon
  • Ensure the AC in the cabin is functional
  • Provide shade and hydration at job sites
  • Train operators to recognize overheating signs (engine warning, abnormal pump pressure)

5. Adopt a Usage-Based Maintenance Schedule

Summer doesn’t mean you only service once — you must adjust frequency based on machine workload.

Working FrequencyMaintenance Tip
Daily operation (8+ hours)Check coolant, oil, and belts every 3–4 days
Medium duty (3–4 days/week)Weekly fluid check, monthly full inspection
On-call or rental usePerform check before and after each dispatch

Use a simple log system (Google Sheet or app) to track hours, inspections, and servicing.

Keep Cool, Work Smart for Concrete Pump Maintenance in Summer

Preventive maintenance during summer is not just about keeping your concrete pump running — it’s about extending its lifespan, protecting your project timeline, and reducing unexpected costs.
